Flores is part of the Azores
The island of Flores belongs to the Grupo Ocidental, the western group of the Azores. From a purely geological point of view, it is located on the North American Plate, but still belongs to Portugal. The residents are proud of the peripheral location of their island; you can find a sign here that points to the western end of Europe – even if the island is more the eastern end of America. But it doesn’t matter.
Sao Tomas and Santa Maria
Flores was discovered in 1452 by the Portuguese navigator Diogo de Teive. The island’s first names were Sao Tomas and Santa Maria. The name Flores later caught on, presumably because of the unique floral landscape. Flores was first settled in 1470 by Wilhelm van der Haegen. He intended to ship the valuable dye plant woad (also called pastel) that grew here to mainland Europe. This plan failed because the island was too remote and there were no regular waterway connections to Europe.
After van der Haegen left the island a few years later, the first settlers came from Portugal in 1500 and founded the villages of Lajes das Flores and Santa Cruz das Flores. The settlers made a living from agriculture, livestock farming and fishing and lived largely isolated for centuries. Only now and then came merchant ships from the neighboring Azores islands to trade, or pirate ships to raid and plunder the island.
When American whalers hunted sperm whales in the waters around the Azores in the mid-19th century, many islanders hired on the whaling ships. In 1963 the French took advantage of the island’s location. They built a telecommunications station, a hospital, a power station and an airport and brought Flores to an economic boom.

This is a beach of black lava sand and lava rock, around 20 km or 30 minutes‘ ride from Santa Cruz. In the capital itself there are the rock pools, also called tide pools, which invite you to cool off. Otherwise, Flores is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and those seeking peace and quiet.
