According to the records, Graciosa was discovered by Vasco Gil Sodre on May 2, 1450 and he immediately settled on the island with his family. The inhabitants achieved prosperity through the cultivation and export of grain and wine, which in turn attracted pirates. 13 fortresses were built over time to repel pirate attacks and protect the islanders. In the 19th century the Azores were a stronghold for whaling, and on Graciosa people made a living from the brickworks. Both were discontinued in the 1960s to 1980s. On January 1, 1980, an earthquake struck, causing great damage, especially in the villages in the south-east, and in 1981 the airport Aerodromo da Graciosa opened.

Cheese on the island

Today Graciosa is known for its cheese. The meadows, on which around 6,000 cows graze, take up around two thirds of the agriculturally usable area. The milk is processed into cheese on the island and then shipped to mainland Portugal. The remaining third is mainly used for growing corn, some of it is used for wheat, sugar cane and wine. A typical picture are the lava quarry stone walls, which are supposed to protect the plants from the wind.

UNESCO added the island to its list of biosphere reserves

Graciosa is opening more and more for tourism with the island administration attaching great importance to cultural and ecotourism – after all, UNESCO added the island to its list of biosphere reserves in 2007. On the major hotel booking portals, we only found around 15 overnight accommodations. Most of them are holiday homes or apartments that are rented out by private hosts. There are only a few hotels to be found on Graciosa. The leading hotel is probably the Inatel Graciosa Resort & Business Hotel, which is located around 3.5 km from the airport in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz.
