La Coruna has something that the Phoenicians already liked: a bay in whose natural harbor the ships were protected from the caprices of the open sea. The Celts and the Romans made use of this natural protection. The latter named the place Ardobicum Corunium. To safely guide their merchant fleet into the port, the Romans built a lighthouse around 110 AD, the so-called Hercules Tower. The tower, which is around 55 m high, was rebuilt in 1791 and added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 2009.

As part of the Spanish War of Independence, the Battle of La Coruna took place on January 16, 1809, in which the French (who occupied northern Spain) and the British fought against each other.
