Porto
It stands to reason that Porto is on the water, because Porto is the porto – uh Portuguese word for port. With around 240,000 inhabitants in the city and around 1.7 million people in the metropolitan area, Porto is the second largest city and the economic and cultural center in northern Portugal. The area around Porto was probably settled around 3,000 years ago. The Greeks recognized the good strategic location at the mouth of the Douro River in the Atlantic and operated a trading post here, which they called Kalos (beautiful). Under the Romans the place was called Portus Cale. As of the year 540 the Visigoths expanded the city into a fortress and a bishop see. In 716 the Moors conquered Porto and in 1092 the city was reconquered by the Catholic Kings. The kingdom of Leon gave the county of Portucale as fiefdom to the crusader Henry of Burgundy in 1096/1097; this marks the beginning of the history of Portugal.
As a port city, Porto benefited from the discovery and colonization of the New World. The city flourished and became very prosperous. In 1703 Portugal and England signed the Methuen Treaty, which provided for the trade of goods at lower fares or even duty-free. As of 1717, many English trading houses opened branches in Porto, and the English settled in the city – in the second half of the 18th century, up to 15% of the approx. 60,000 inhabitants are said to have been English. Conversely, Porto was able to export port wine, which comes from the area and owes its name to the city, to England at low cost.
Most important city in the northern Portugal
Today Porto is the most important city in the northern Portugal and the counterpart to the capital in the south. While Lisbon is the country’s political and cultural capital, Porto is its economic center. The most important branches of industry include: textile and leather goods, metal industry, luxury goods and the (petro) chemical industry. The international port of Leixoes and the airport Aeroporto Francisco Sa Carneiro are major transportation hubs. With its Art Academy, various museums, the Theater and the Opera, Porto also offers a lot in terms of culture. The old town of Porto was declared a UNESCO world heritage Site in 1996.
