Sao Miguel – largest island in the Azores
With an area of around 747 square km, Sao Miguel (in English: Saint Michael) is a little smaller than Hamburg, but the largest island in the Azores. It belongs to the Grupo Oriental, the Eastern Group of the Azores. Around 140,000 people live here, around half of them in the capital, Ponta Delgada. The airport Aeroporto Joao Paulo II, named after Pope John Paul II, is around 2.519 km from London Luton. A private jet takes about six hours to cover this route. The airport is located a little west of the capital; there are around 5 km from the terminal to downtown Ponta Delgada and the riding time is around 15 minutes. Volcanic origin
Originally the island probably consisted of two parts, which were connected to each other around 10,000 years ago after a volcanic eruption. Since then, the west-east extension has around 64 km and the north-south extension around 16 km. The volcanic origin has left its mark: the Sete Cidades collapse crater is located in the western part of the island. The volcanic cone has a diameter of around 5 km and a circumference of around 12 km. In the cone there are two lakes that are connected to each other: the Lagoa Azul and the Lagoa Verde. The lush landscape is very popular with nature lovers and is criss-crossed by numerous hiking trails. In the eastern part of the island is the Serra Agua de Pau Mountain with the approx. 1,105-m-high Pico da Vara and the Pico de Fogo, which was only formed in 1652 by a volcanic eruption. In the Furnas Valley you can find the so-called caldeiras, which are sulfur- and iron-containing thermal springs with sometimes even small geysers.
Terra Nostra Park
The Terra Nostra Park is an absolute highlight. In 1780, the American consul Thomas Hickling built his summer residence here, later known as Yankee Hall and laid out a botanical garden. In the course of time the garden was enlarged. On an area of now approx. 12.5 hectares there are collections of camellias, cycas, hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons, numerous ornamental plants and water lilies, native plants and thousands of trees from all over the world. Next to it is a lake with hot water rich in mineral salts and therapeutic mud. The former mansion was converted into a hotel. We believe: The Terra Nostra Park is perhaps one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Beaches and rock pools
Sao Miguel offers a lot not only in terms of landscape, but also for beach tourists. There are around 20 beaches and a handful of so-called rock pools (also called tide pools). Two of the most beautiful beaches are on the south coast of the island: Praia das Milicias is about 5 km or about 15 minutes east of Ponta Delgada. Those who live in the eastern part of the island do not have to go far to Praia do Fogo in the coastal town of Ribeira Quente.
