History of Almeria
It is unclear when the area of Almeria became inhabited. Although there was already a settlement called Urci in the Roman Empire, which is said to have been near the city of Almeria, several locations are assumed for this settlement. The history of the city officially begins in the year 955 AD and the founder is Abd ar-Rahman III who was the first caliph of Cordoba at the time. Like so many cities on the southern Iberian Peninsula that were occupied by the Moors, Almeria flourished economically. Among other products, silk, oils and raisins were traded in the port. After the fragmentation of the Cordoba Caliphate in 1031, Almeria was ruled by powerful local emirs. Most of them were fearless warriors, but also lovers of art and culture and brought great prosperity to the city.
Reconquest by the Catholic Kings
In 1147, King Alfonso VII led a Christian crusade of Catalans, Genoese, Pisans and Franks to Almeria. After a siege lasting around three months, the rich city was captured. The occupation, however, lasted only a short time – a few years later the Almohads succeeded in regaining control of Almeria. The Reconquista, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Catholic Kings, did not stop at Almeria either. In 1482 the conquest of the kingdom of Granada began. On December 26, 1489, the city acknowledged the rule of the Catholic Kings Isabel and Fernando – and Almeria became Christian again.
The 16th century was a century of disaster for Almeria. There were at least four earthquakes, of which the 1522 earthquake was particularly violent; not until the 19th century were the traces of the devastation removed. After the Las Alpujarras War, the Muslims were banished from Almeria and spread all over Spain. And not to forget the landings and attacks of the Berber pirates, who preyed on the city times and again.
Agriculture of Almeira
After the discovery of huge iron deposits in the 18th century, British and French companies settled in and brought great prosperity to Almeria. Today the city is known for its agriculture: around 400 square km around Almeria are built with plastic-covered greenhouses, the so-called Invernaderos. Half of Europe is supplied with fruit and vegetables from here. The second important branch of the economy is tourism. In the southeast of the city there is a beach about 3 km long, starting with Playa de San Miguel. If you are in the mood for culture, we recommend a visit to the Alcazaba; the castle, built in the 10th century is one of the largest fortifications on the Iberian Peninsula. And in the evening the numerous tapas bars in the old town await their hungry and thirsty visitors.
Autonomous community of Andalusia
Almeria has around 200,000 inhabitants and is located in the autonomous community of Andalusia, on the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula – here the sun shines for around 3,000 hours a year.
