Algarve
The word Algarve comes from the Arabic al-gharb or al-garb and means west. And indeed the Arabs were right: the Algarve is the most south-western region on the European continent. Today the Algarve is one of the seven regions of Portugal. With an area of almost 5,000 square km (more precisely about 4,989 square km) and around 440,000 inhabitants, it accounts for around 5.6% of the area and around 4.3% of the population of mainland Portugal.
Geographically, the Algarve is bordered in the north by the Alentejo region and in the east by the Rio Guadiana; the river also forms the border with neighboring Spain. To the west and south is the open Atlantic. The Algarve has a coastline of around 200 km, of which around 150 km are on the south coast and around 50 km on the west coast.
Serra, Barrocal and Litoral
The Algarve comprises three natural areas: Serra, Barrocal and Litoral. The Serra is a hilly landscape. Most of the Serra lies at an altitude of around 300 to around 500 m; in the northwest the Serra de Monchique reaches its highest point with the approx. 902-m-high mountain Pico da Fioa. The Serra makes up for around half of the area of the Algarve. South of the Serra are the foothills of the Barrocal. The Barrocal takes up about a quarter of the area of the Algarve and is mainly used for agriculture. Both zones, the Serra and the Barrocal are hardly visited and are of no tourist importance. It looks completely different with the Litoral. As the name already suggests, this is the coastal region. The Litoral covers around a quarter of the Algarve. It is very densely populated and is the destination of numerous tourists.
Capital of the Algarve
The capital of the Algarve region is Faro, with around 65,000 inhabitants. The international airport Aeroporto de Faro is about 1.756 km away from London Luton; flight time by private jet is around three hours. It gets very hot in the summer months; temperatures of over 30 degrees combined with high humidity are almost the order of the day. If you want to swim in the sea, you have to be tough – the Atlantic remains relatively cool even in July and August with around 20 degrees. Fortunately, most hotels in the Algarve have a swimming pool.
Eldorado for golf vacationers
In winter the Algarve has blossomed into an Eldorado for golf vacationers. Around three dozen golf courses make every golfer’s heart beat faster! Before you travel, think about which of the numerous holiday resorts and golf courses you prefer, because keep in mind: with a coastline of approx. 200 km, the Algarve is a very large destination!
