Archipelago in the Atlantic
Have you always wanted to go to America without having to leave Europe? Then book a private jet flight to the Azores! The Azores are an archipelago in the Atlantic, about 1,370 km from Portugal and 1,930 km from Canada. There are about 3,600 km to New York. The distance from London Luton to the capital Ponta Delgada is around 2.519 km which corresponds to a flight time of around six hours.
Archaeological finds suggest that the archipelago was already visited in the 4th century BC by the Phoenicians. The Azores can be found for the first time on nautical charts from the 14th century. In 1437, the Diogo de Silves Archipelago was taken over for Portugal and called Ilhas dos Acores – so hawk islands, although it was not hawks but buzzards that the conquerors saw. The islands began to be settled in 1431; the first settlers settled on Santa Maria. After the discovery of America, the archipelago gained great strategic importance: the Azores became an important base for supplying seafarers with food and water on their way to America and for repairing ships, if necessary.
Coal bunkers were later built here to equip the passing steamships with coal. The first submarine cable was laid over the Azores and from the 1930s onwards, aircrafts used the Azores as a refueling stop on their flights from Europe to America and back. The American armed forces also took advantage of the favorable location during World War II.
The Azores
The Azores are nine large, inhabited islands that can be geographically divided into three groups. The Grupo Ocidental (also known as the Western Group) is located in the northwest and consists of the islands of Corvo and Flores. These islands are located on the North American Continental Plate and therefore belong to America from a geological point of view. In the southeast is the Grupo Oriental (Eastern Group) with the islands of Santa Maria and Sao Miguel. Sao Miguel is the largest island in the Azores; the capital Ponta Delgada with around 70,000 inhabitants is also located here. In between is the Grupo Central (Central Group) with the five islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira. There are also some uninhabited islands, the Formigas (don’t laugh, it means ants).
The climate in the Azores is mild all year round. The temperatures in winter are around 11 degrees during the night and 17 degrees during the day, in summer around 19 degrees during the night and around 25 degrees during the day; 30 degrees is reached on warm summer days. The water temperature is around 16 degrees in winter and around 23 degrees in summer. While spring and summer are mostly dry, autumn and winter can lead to tropical storms with strong winds and rainfalls. Basically it can be said that it is rainier on the western islands and sunnier and drier on the eastern islands.
The Azores are very popular with nature lovers – hikers in particular will feel at home on the islands! Contrary to other rumors, there are also numerous sand beaches in the Azores. Most of them can be found on the islands of Sao Miguel and Terceira.
