Bilbao

The Romans had already recognized the good location and built a settlement called Bellum Vadum here at the mouth of the Nervion River in the Bay of Biscay. The Romans mined iron ore in the area, which they could use for military purposes. Later this place was called Bilbaum. On June 15, 1300, Diego Lopez V de Haro founded the city of Bilvao on the spot where the Bilbao la Vieja district is today. The oldest streets are probably Dendarikal (also called Tenderia), Artekale and Goienkale (Somera), located southeast of the cathedral.

The inhabitants of Bilbao who lived at that time were farmers, sailors and ironsmiths. The importance of agriculture diminished over time; fishing and iron processing have remained and have shaped the city and its inhabitants. Trade with other cities in Europe as well as the Spanish colonies in America brought Bilbao great prosperity in the 18th century.

From 1795 to 1876 Bilbao was the scene of various wars and sieges. At first it was the French who conquered Bilbao and occupied it until 1813. On October 3, 1833, an uprising broke out in the city, as a result of which Don Carlos declared himself King of Spain the next day. Although the uprising was suppressed, Bilbao was repeatedly besieged, shot at and partially destroyed in the so-called Carlist Wars, which lasted until 1876.

Leading industrial city

After the wars, Bilbao literally blossomed. The city expanded; numerous suburbs were incorporated. While Bilbao had around 32,000 inhabitants in 1877, in 1900 there were already around 83,000 people living here. In addition to the ironworks, shipyards were built; the shipping companies promoted trade and banking. Bilbao developed into the leading industrial city in northern Spain. Traditionally there have been very good connections to England, which is also reflected in the name of the largest football club: It’s called Athletic Bilbao – and not Atletico.

In the 1970s, the coal and steel industry began to decline steadily and with it the city. Unemployment rose and Bilbao became a gray, dirty city. To counteract this, construction work began on one of the most famous museums in the world in 1993. Four years later the time had come – in 1997 the building was opened. It is located in downtown Bilbao on the banks of the Nervion River; the glass and steel facade refers to the steel processing industry. As a result, what the politicians had hoped for, set in: the museum breathed new life into Bilbao. The city found its way back to its former strength and is today one of the most economically and culturally important cities in Spain. When a single building brings an entire city to life, it is called the Bilbao Effect. We are talking about the Guggenheim Museum.
