Smallest island in the Azores

If you fly to Corvo, then you are geologically already in America, because Corvo is located on the North American Tectonic Plate. Nevertheless, there are still around 3,600 km to New York. Corvo belongs to the Grupo Ocidental, the western group of the Azores. With an area of just over 17 square km, it is the smallest island in the Azores. The only 430 islanders practically all live in the capital Vila do Corvo, one of the smallest cities in the world.

Although it is so small and so sparsely populated, Corvo has a small regional airport with a runway of around 800 m. From here there are regular flights to the neighboring island of Flores and to Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores on Sao Miguel.

Arrival by private jet

The Aerodromo do Corvo is about 2.714 km away from London Luton. A private jet takes around four and a half hours to cover this distance. The eastern end of the runway is practically on the edge of the town of Vila do Corvo. If you walk into town from the private jet, you are probably faster than by a taxi – but the private jet professionals at privatejet.co.uk will be happy to book you a transfer. If you choose to run, you don’t have to pay attention to the air traffic when crossing the runway – the probability of being hit by a plane taking off or landing on Corvo is less than winning the lottery.

Hotel Comodoro

The Hotel Comodoro is probably by far the best hotel on the island. It is at least the only hotel on Corvo that we have found in the usual booking portals. It has 13 guest rooms (including one triple room and twelve double rooms) with bathroom, TV, coffee maker and hairdryer, a bar and a breakfast room and is located around 600 m or two minutes‘ ride from the airport terminal (around ten minutes walking).

Corvo is of volcanic origin

Like the other Azores islands, Corvo is of volcanic origin. The island is slightly teardrop-shaped when viewed from above, with the wider end to the north. Here is the Monte Gordo, an extinct volcano, with its approx. 2-km-wide and approx. 300-m-deep caldera. At the southern edge of the caldera is the island’s highest elevation at around 718 m, the Morro dos Homens (hill of the people) and at the bottom of the caldera is the lake Lagoa do Caldeirao.

The south consists of a plain that slopes down to the cliffs by the sea. The green crater pastures are typical of the island. In the lush landscape, the farmers work in agriculture and livestock breeding and sell the beef on the Portuguese mainland, where the meat of the Corvo cattle is very well known and loved. This and fishing are the livelihoods of the islanders.

Private accommodations

In terms of tourism, Corvo is a blank page, a fact that we have already expressed in a previous paragraph. In addition to what is probably the only hotel, there are also some private accommodations that the islanders like to rent out to visitors. But who gets lost in Corvo? Vila do Corvo is not exactly the world, but it is the ideal place to switch off and relax. Leave your notebook at home and switch off your mobile phone. Go for a walk and enjoy the tranquility and fresh sea air on this secluded island. The locals are always looking forward to guests who want to get to know them and their island!
