Island in the Azores

Like all other Azores islands, Faial is also of volcanic origin. With an area of around 172 square km, it is the fifth largest or fifth smallest island in the Azores, depending on how you see it. It is around 14 km wide, around 21 km long and up to around 1,043 m high – the highest point is the extinct volcano Cabeco Gordo with a height of around 1,043 m. Its crater is around 2km in diameter and around 500 m deep.

Arrival by private jet

Faial is part of the Grupo Central, the central group of the Azores Islands. There are around 2.645 km or around six hours by private jet to London Luton. The airport Aeroporta da Horta Airport is located around 8 km west of the island’s same-named capital; a taxi takes around 15 minutes to cover this distance. The eastern and central islands of the Azores were discovered by the navigator Diogo de Silves in 1427 and colonized by the Portuguese as of 1832. A few centuries passed before the telegraph companies took advantage of the island’s strategic location between Europe and America: from 1893 onwards, several companies laid submarine cables between the two continents and made Faial an important communication hub.

Unfortunately, there were always devastating volcanic eruptions. In 1672 the Cabeco di Fogo erupted, killing numerous people. In the years 1957 and 1958, so much lava flowed into the Atlantic that the island area increased by approx. two and a half square km and the Ponta dos Capelinhos formed. In 2008 the Casa dos Botes Museum opened here, which deals with volcanology and the history of the eruption. On July 9, 1998, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the island. Although the epicenter was about 5km off the coast, there was severe damage. About 500 houses collapsed and eight people died.

Capital Horta

Today Faial has around 15,000 inhabitants. Almost half of them live in the capital Horta. The place is well known for all sailing enthusiasts – people circumnavigating the world stop here and leave colorful memories on the quay wall, which is a well-known sight on the island. Perhaps the Peter Cafe Sport is also well known; opened in 1918, the cafe is known for its gin and tonics and chocolate cake and is very popular with sailors.

The Praca da Republica is the center of the old town of Horta. Here, in Vila Velha, numerous buildings were rebuilt in the Art Deco style after the earthquake of 1926, such as the fire station or the theater Teatro Faialense. Other sights include the Mercado Municipal Market Hall, the Torre do Relogio Clock Tower and the Santa Cruz Fortress.

Hotels in Horta

There are a number of hotels and apartments in Horta and the surrounding area that cater to the needs of tourists. Our personal favorite is the Azoris Faial Garden, which is located in a park-like complex directly above the Horta Marina.
