Faro
The area of Faro was probably already settled by the Phoenicians and later taken over by the Romans, who called the place Ossonoba; the region was known for wine and fish. In 418 Faro was conquered by the Visigoths and in 713 by the Moors. Under the Moorish rule, the city flourished economically and culturally; Faro developed into the most important trading center on the southwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. The Moors built a ring of defenses; gradually the name Ossonoba was replaced by Santa Maria.
As part of the Reconquista, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Catholics, Faro was occupied in 1249 by the Portuguese King Afonso III. In 1540 Faro received city rights and in 1577 took over the bishop’s see from the city of Silves. Earthquakes devastated the area in 1722 and 1755; after the last quake, the seat of the Kingdom of the Algarve was moved from Lagos to Faro, which was less severely damaged by the earthquakes.
The population of Faro has grown steadily over the past few decades and is now around 65,000 people. So Faro is not a big city, but a very popular city in a beautiful area that is divided into two parts: the coastline belongs to the Ria Formosa National Park and the hilly hinterland to Barrocal, with the typical vegetation of the Algarve. Many species of birds come here to spend the winter, including terns and flamingos. All this makes the region a popular destination for nature lovers and ecotourists.
Beautiful golf courses
Golfers have also discovered the area for themselves – the Faro area is home to some of the most beautiful golf courses on the Iberian Peninsula! Then there are the pleasant temperatures: in the winter months, the daytime temperature is around 15 degrees. The average of around six hours of sunshine per day is sufficient for a game on an 18-hole golf course and a drink on the flight afterwards. Order a drink for us too!
