Madrid
Although it can be assumed that Madrid is significantly older, the records only go back to the 9th century AD. The southern part of the Iberian Peninsula was then ruled by the Moors; it was the so-called emirate of Cordoba. Emir Muhammad I had a Moorish fortress (Alcazar) built on the site where the Madrid Royal Palace is today. In 1083 the city was conquered by the troops of King Alfonso VI as part of the Reconquista, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Catholic Kings.
After that, (almost) nothing happened for about half a millennium. This changed when King Philip II (also known as Felipe II) moved his residence from Valladolid to Madrid in 1561. Madrid became the capital and its rise began. Under the rule of the Habsburgs, for example, the Puerta del Sol, the Monastery of the Descalzas Reales, the Palacio de Uceda, the Plaza de la Villa, the Plaza Mayor and the Colegiata de San Isidro were built. The district is called El Madrid de los Austrias.
The War of Succession that broke out in 1701 ended with the Bourbons taking over the throne in 1714. The Bourbons built the royal palace, modernized the city’s infrastructure, such as the water supply, and built numerous public buildings.
In 1923 a military dictatorship came to power in Spain; first General Miguel Primo de Riviera ruled the country (until 1930), then General Francisco Franco (from 1936 and 1939). After the Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, Franco had the city rebuilt according to his plans and had unfinished buildings completed. In 1959 he proclaimed an economic reform (Plan de Estabilizacion). In Spain, up to the present time one of the poorest countries in Western Europe, an upswing began that lasted until the financial crisis in 2007. Architecturally, this made itself felt in Madrid, for example, in the construction of skyscrapers. From 1900 (around 500,000 inhabitants) to 1980 (around three million inhabitants) the population of Madrid increased sixfold; the Spanish capital grew into one of the largest metropolises in the European Union. Spain has been a constitutional monarchy since Franco’s death in 1975.
