Ponta do Pico

The Azores island got the name Pico from the volcano by the same name, the Ponta do Pico. With around 2,351 m it is the highest mountain in Portugal. Pico itself belongs to the Grupo Central, the Central Group of the Azores. The island is about 42 km long and about 15 kilometers wide. With around 447 square km, Pico is slightly larger than the city of Bremen. This makes it the second largest island in the Azores, but with around 14,000 people it only accounts for around 5% of the island’s population.

Arrival by private jet

The Aeroporto da Ilha do Pico is a small regional airport with very few scheduled flight connections. It is located around 10 km east of the island’s capital Madalena; the riding time is around 15 minutes. The distance to London Luton is around 2.625 kilometers, which takes a private jet around six hours. Around 250,000 years old, Pico is the youngest island in the Azores. In 1439 the Portuguese took it into possession and settled down from 1460 onwards. They raised cattle and grew grain and yams, the tubers of which are edible and are therefore considered food. Viticulture became a later occupation until powdery mildew spread rapidly in the middle of the 19th century. The fishermen lived for a long time from whaling, which was abandoned in the mid-1980s. Two whaling museums bear witness to a bygone era.

The quality of life on Pico was affected by three serious natural events: In 1562 and 1718 the volcano Ponta do Pico erupted, and in 1980 an earthquake shook the island. This could be one reason why the island is so sparsely populated.

Pico sights

Anyone who talks about the island’s capital at Madalena is exaggerating a little. With just around 2,500 inhabitants, it is more likely to be the main town. Sights include the Igreja Santa Maria Madalena Parish Church, the towers of which can be seen from afar, the Camara Municipal Town Hall, the Imperio do Espirito Santo Chapel and the former Carmelite Monastery, which has housed the Wine Museum since 1999. Viticulture plays a very important role on the island. In 2004, the viticulture on the island of Pico became a UNESCO world heritage.

The pyramids of lava rock are typical of the island. The stones for them were picked up and piled up in the fields by the farmers because they interfered with the work in the fields. A nice example of such a pyramid can be found in the Jardim dos Maroicos Park in Madalena.

There are no real beaches on Pico. This is because the island is very young; the weather did not have enough time to grind down the rough rock. Anyone looking for a sandy beach will have to wait a few million years. What can be found here are so-called rock pools, also called tide pools. These are swimming pools that are located directly on the sea and are often washed over by the waves or the tides. However, if you want to hike and enjoy the lush nature, Pico is the right place for you!
