Island of short distances

Santa Maria, in English Holy Mary, is the third smallest of the nine inhabited islands of the Azores with an area of around 97 square km. Around 5,500 people live in the five island communities, around 3,000 of them in the capital, Vila do Porto. All of this makes Santa Maria very clear and an island of short distances – there are around 3 km from the terminal of Aeroporto de Santa Maria to the town, which takes around five minutes riding time. From London Luton to Santa Maria there are around 2.551 km that a private jet covers in around six hours. Oldest island of the Azores

Despite being so small, Santa Maria is the oldest of island of the Azores. The western part of the island consists of a plain that is around 100 m above sea level. It tends to be sunny and dry here. The eastern part is very hilly; at the highest point, the Pico Alto with its 587 m, rainfall provides for lush vegetation.

The island was supposedly discovered in 1427 and initially remained without a name. In 1439, during the Assumption of Mary, it was named in honor of Saint Mary – Santa Maria. In the same year the Portuguese began to settle. For more than five centuries there was relatively little going on here. In 1941 the Americans came up with the idea of creating an airfield in order to use it for military purposes – the plateau in the western part of the island was ideally suited for this. It would take another three years before construction finally began in 1944. When the airfield was completed after a few months, WWII was over.

In 1947 Portugal took possession of the airfield and civil use began. The location of the island in the middle of the Atlantic and the runway around 3,000 m long and 60 m wide made Aeroporto de Santa Maria an ideal destination for stopovers, as the then propelled aircrafts could not fly the route across the Atlantic without refueling. When jet planes that could fly non-stop across the Atlantic were invented in the 1960s, the island gradually sank back into its slumber, including the airport, where there are still very few scheduled flight connections.

Fishing, agriculture and tourism

In addition to the airport, there is also a small port, which is located below Vila do Porto. Above all, fishing boats moor here – fishing, agriculture and tourism are the three main sources of income of the island’s population. The big cruise ships sail around Santa Maria and leave the island largely alone.

The popular online booking portals only offer around two dozen overnight accommodations on Santa Maria. The hotels can be counted on one hand. Most of the accommodations are apartments or holiday homes. And anyone expecting haute cuisine has come to the wrong place on Santa Maria. The island is ideal if you want to relax and are looking for peace and quiet – or if you are a nature lover and like to lace up your hiking boots.
