Santander
After winning the Cantabrian Wars, the Roman Emperor Augustus founded in 26 BC at this place the victorious port of Portus Victoriae Luliobrigensium. The current name of the city is probably derived from the martyr Emeterius; Sancti Emetherii became Sancte Endere and later Santander. In 1248, the city took part in the battles for the conquest of Seville and as a thank you received a coat of arms on which the Torre del Oro (Gold tower) and the Guadalquivir River can be seen – both sights that are not in Santander, but in Seville.
Capital of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria
Santander is located on the north coast of Spain and is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, one of the smallest regions in the country. The city traditionally maintained good relations with the neighboring, much larger and more powerful kingdom of Castile and Leon; so the king of Castile could use the port of Santander for his expeditions, conquests and trade with the New World. It was not until 1755 that Santander was granted city rights.
Unfortunately, the city was repeatedly hit by severe blows of fate. On November 3, 1893, a freighter loaded with around 51 tons of dynamite caught fire in the port of Santander and exploded; around 590 people were killed and around 525 people were seriously injured. Santander was also the scene of various combat operations in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. In 1941, a fire broke out in Calle Cadiz, near the port, which was carried all over the city by the strong south wind. The fire almost completely destroyed the historical part of the city; thousands of people became homeless.

The airport Aeropuerto de Santander opened in 1953 and has been used for international flights since 1957. It is located relatively close to the city in the Bay of Santander, around 6 km south of the city center (riding time around 10 to 15 minutes). The distance to London Luton is around 973 km, for which a private jet takes around two hours. El Faro de Cabo Mayor Lighthouse
Although there are no or hardly any historical buildings left by the fire of 1941, Santander offers a few sights. The Cathedral, which was built between the 12th century and the 14th century, was reconstructed after the great fire. The Palacio de la Magdalena was built in 1909 as a gift from the Spanish people to the royal family. The Centro Botin, which opened in 2017, is named after the founding family of Banco Santander, a modern museum and conference center. Since 2005 the El Faro de Cabo Mayor Lighthouse has housed the Centro de Arte Cabo Mayor, a museum with works by international artists. And if you want to swim, go to Playa Sardinero. Queen Isabella II (in 1861) and King Amadeus I (in 1872) spent their summer holidays here.
