Sao Jorge is part of the Azores
Sao Jorge, named after Saint George, belongs to the Grupo Central, the central group of the Azores. Within this group, too, it is centrally located, in the middle between its four neighboring islands. Seen from above, the island looks like a dagger: it is between 233 and 244 square km (in fact, we have found different information about the area of the island) and with a length of around 53 km and a width of just about 7 km, whereby it tapers from the southeast to the northwest – just like a dagger.
Volcanic origin
Like its sister islands in the Azores, Sao Jorge is of volcanic origin. A special feature of the island is the 400- to 700-meter-high cliff, at the foot of which there are around 75 fajas – small coastal plains created by landslides or lava flows. Many of the fajas were previously inhabited and abandoned after the 1980 earthquake. A mountain ridge stretches across the island, in the middle of which lies the approx. 1,053- m-high extinct volcano Pico da Esperanca. In contrast to the other Azores islands, there are no caldeiras (volcanic basins) on Sao Jorge.
Sao Jorge was discovered in 1439 and settlement began around 1470. The first settler was Wilhelm van der Haegen (also called Guilherme da Silveira), who settled on the island with his family and founded the town of Topo. In the following centuries, pirates overcrowded the town times and again, which is why fortresses were built. On July 9, 1757, an earthquake shook the island and destroyed all settlements in the east; about a fifth of the population died.
Capital Velas
Today the island has around 9,000 inhabitants. About a third live in the capital Velas, which is located in the northwest of the island. The islanders live mainly from agriculture, livestock and fishing. Wheat and wine are grown on Sao Jorge and the island is also known for its cheese, which matures here and is then sold on the mainland.
Arrival by private jet
The airport in Sao Jorge is relatively small. There are currently only a few flight connections to the neighboring islands. We therefore recommend booking a private jet to get to Sao Jorge. The island is around 2.599 km away from London Luton. A private jet takes about six hours to cover this route. Aerodromo Sao Jorge Airport is about 6 km east of the island’s capital, Velas. The riding time by taxi is around ten minutes. Accommodation in Sao Jorge
Compared to its neighboring islands, Sao Jorge is relatively little developed for tourism. Since there are practically no beaches for bathing, the island especially attracts those looking for peace and quiet, nature lovers and hikers. The places where you can find accommodation are Velas, Urzelina (around 4 km from the airport) and Manadas (around 8 km from the airport). The leading hotel is probably the Sao Jorge Garden Hotel, which is located on the outskirts of Velas with a view over the Atlantic (around 6 km or ten minutes‘ ride from the airport). For those who like it more rustic, we recommend a stay in private accommodation with friendly hosts.
