Tarragona
A Catalan legend has it that Tarragona was founded in 2407 BC and named after Tarraho, Tubal’s eldest son. Another source derives the name from Taharqa the Ethiopian, an Egyptian pharaoh who, in the 7th century BC fought in Spain. The city could also have started from Kesse or Kosse, named after the Iberian tribe of the Cossetans. Or it was founded by the Phoenicians and called Tarchon (Citadel).
Built into a fortress
During the Roman occupation, the city was built into a fortress to protect it from attacks of the Carthaginians. The city was then called Colonia Iulia Urbs Trimphalis Tarraco and was the capital of the province of Hispania Citerior, which roughly corresponds to today’s autonomous communities of Catalonia and Valencia; later it became the capital of the much larger and same-named province Hispania Tarraconensis, which comprised about two thirds of the Iberian Peninsula. After his campaign in Cantabria, Emperor Augustus spent the winter in Tarraco and granted the city numerous honorary degrees. Tarragona was then one of the wealthiest cities on the Iberian Coast; it was known for its wine, its flax and had the right to mint its own coins.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city was conquered first by the Vandals and then by the Visigoths. In 714, Tarragona was conquered by the Moors. Starting with 1117 the city belonged to the County of Barcelona, from 1164 to the Kingdom of Aragon.
In the centuries that followed, Tarragona was the scene of numerous wars. In 1641 the city was captured by Catalan insurgents and in 1644 it was reconquered by Spanish troops. In 1705 Tarragona was conquered by Allied Portuguese, Dutch and British soldiers as part of the War of the Spanish Succession and remained in their hands until the Peace of Utrecht in 1713. During the Napoleonic Wars, Tarragona was captured by French troops from 1811 to 1813. The last fighting took place in 1939 during the Spanish Civil War.
Iberian Peninsula
Today Tarragona is much more peaceful. The city is located in the east of the Iberian Peninsula, about 100 km west of Barcelona. It has around 135,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the province by the same name within the autonomous community of Catalonia. Tarragona has an important industrial port, which is also used by cruise ships and shares an international airport with the neighboring city of Reus.
Arrival by private jet
The Aeroport de Reus is about 1.198 km or about two hours by plane from London Luton. There are around 12 km from the airport terminal to the old town (riding time by taxi around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the traffic situation).
Places of interest in Tarragona
The boulevard of Tarragona is La Rambla Nova. The approximately 2-km-long long promenade runs straight through the city, with numerous shops, hotels and restaurants. A little to the east is the old town, with its narrow streets and countless tapas bars. The coast of Tarragona begins at the eastern end of La Rambla Nova. Seven stretches of beach can be found over a length of approx. 15 km where you can thoroughly enjoy the Spanish sun. If you want, we will be glad to help you find a suitable hotel for you!
