Central Group of the Azores
Terceira belongs to the so-called Grupo Central, the Central Group of the Azores. The island was probably discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1439 as the third island in the Azores, so the name almost came about by itself: Terceira means the third in Portuguese. And as luck would have it, Terceira is also the third largest in the Azores with an area of around 397 square km. It is oval-shaped and has a length of about 29 km and a width of about 18 km and a coastline of around 128 km. It is mostly a steep cliff; only in the town of Praia da Vitoria there are a few beaches (praia means beach).
Settlement on the island began in 1450. The first people came from Flanders and northern Portugal with their families and settled on the island. They grew wheat, sugar cane and woad (also known as pastel) and cleared the forest to build ships. In order to repel the attacks of the pirates, fortresses were built in Angra, which made the city almost impregnable. These fortifications became part of the UNESCO world heritage in 1983. Over time, Terceira developed into an important trading post between the Old and New World. From the end of the 19th century, tea, tobacco and pineapple, which were exported to the mainland, were added to the already mentioned crops.
In 1930 the military airfield Aerodromo da Achada opened. The airport played an important role in World War II, as this was where American fighter planes were refueled. At times the airport had three runways, including the longest runway in the world at around 3,300 m at the time. The airfield was handed over to Portugal in 1946, but continued to be used by the United States during the Cold War.

Around 55,000 people live on Terceira, around 35,000 of them in the capital Angra do Heroismo; the town of Praia da Vitoria has around 6,000 residents. Although there are very few beaches, the island is relatively well developed for tourism and has some nice hotels and other accommodations, so that it is difficult for us to make a recommendation at this point. The general rule is: if you want to swim, you should look for a hotel in Praia da Vitoria or the surrounding area, where the beaches are. For everyone else, we recommend a hotel in Angra. From here you can take very nice excursions to the center of the island. Like the other islands in the Azores, Terceira is very popular with nature lovers, hikers and those seeking peace and quiet.
