History of Zaragoza

Zaragoza is located in northwestern Spain, about halfway between Madrid and Barcelona. The city lies on the Ebro, the second longest river on the Iberian Peninsula with around 910 km. Zaragoza was founded between 24 and 12 BC by the Romans; they named the settlement Colonia Caesaraugusta. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the place was conquered by the Suebi in 452 AD and only 14 years later, in 466, came the Visigoths.

In 711 the Moors invaded the Iberian Peninsula and conquered large parts of what is now Spain and Portugal, including the area around Zaragoza. From then on, the city belonged to the Emirate of Cordoba (later the Caliphate of Cordoba). The Moors called the place Saraqusta and were busy trading, so that the city flourished economically and culturally. One of the contemporary witnesses is the city palace Aljaferia, the oldest parts of which date back to the Moorish rule.

When the caliphate split into several sub-kingdoms, the city was first ruled by the Tujibids, then the Hudids and, from 1110, the Almoravids. A few years later, more precisely in 1118, the Catholic King Alfonso I conquered the middle Ebro Valley as part of the Reconquista, made Zaragoza the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon and populated the area with Christians.

Bourbon king of Spain

In the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 to 1714) there were also fights in Zaragoza, during which the Austrian and English troops under Archduke Charles won, conquered Saragossa and expelled the Spaniards under Philip V – but this ultimately had no impact on the overall result. At the end of the war, Philip V was crowned as Felipe V, the first Bourbon king of Spain; the reign of the House of Bourbon continues to this day. In 1808, Zaragoza was besieged by French troops – initially unsuccessfully. A year later, the French returned, and this time they were able to successfully conquer Zaragoza. And even in the 20th century things did not get quiet in Zaragoza: during the Spanish Civil War, which was fought between nationalists and republicans, the city was the scene of various armed conflicts several times in 1936 and 1937 during which several thousand people were killed.

One of the largest cities in Spain

Today the city is much more peaceful. Zaragoza is one of the largest cities in Spain with around 670,000 inhabitants and the capital of the autonomous region of Aragon. In 2008 the Expo, the world exhibition, took place here, and of course a city of this size and importance also has an international airport, the Aeropuerto de Zaragoza. This is about 1.136 km from London Luton, which corresponds to about two hours by plane by private jet. The airport is about 13 km west of the old town, and it takes about 25 to 30 minutes by taxi or limousine to get there, depending on the traffic situation.
